Addiction as a Behavioral Health Disorder

Behavioral health disorders can victimized anybody. Although we have thecontrol to choose, peer pressures can get in the way of the decisions we will be making. One of the most common behavioral health disorders is addiction. Addiction is quite widespread in every society. Addiction knows no age bracket and socio-economic status. Addiction as defined in the Merriam Webster Dictionary can mean persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful.

One can get addicted to anything. One can even get addicted to sex and love. Substance addiction is one of the most popular kind of addiction. Its popularity has sprung from the representation it gives off, a negative one. People who are in the pits of substance addiction usually flaunt a series of bad behaviors distressing people around him or her.

There are many different substances an individual can get addicted to. Examples of substances that produces negative effects on the body are stimulants, opioids, hallucinogens and PCPs. These substances affect certain biochemicals in our brain which has direct reinforcing effects. One of the areas in the brain that is involved in the effects of these substances is the mesolimbic dopamine system. A experience of good food and physical pleasure such as those produced by sexual stimulation activates this kind of system. This system can be turned on by psychoactive substances already mentioned. The effect is always so severe. The activation of mesolimbic dopamine system creates people to desire the reason of activation to repeat its effects. The utilization

of such substances gives off established changes in one’s mesolimbic dopamine system which makes an individual desire for the substance. The mesolimbic dopamine system gets hyperactive once the substance has been used repetitively. In short term and long term use of these substances, makes hard for the people to resist once they have already tried. The careless trying of any of the substances can make an individual crave for more. This is due to the reason that the short-lived high is so compelling.

The central nervous system is the one that gets activated every time stimulants are used. This causes feelings such as pleasure, energy, authority, a decreased desire for sleep, and reduced appetite. Cocaine, amphetamines, nicotine, and caffeine are examples of stimulants. Cocaine is one of the most highly addictive substances ever known. This substance can be inhaled to have its effects felt rapidly. Amphetamines are substances initially introduced as antihistamines until people started noticing its stimulant effects. Nicotine is an alkaloid being found in tobaccos. Nicotine can be famously found in cigarettes. Caffeine on the other hand is the most heavy used stimulant substance. Greatest amount of caffeine used is attributed to the wide use of coffee.

Opioids is used for a thousand of years to ease pain until its assets have been discovered to be severely addictive. Morphine and heroin are examples of opioids. Morphine was used commonly as a pain reliever. This has been in the 19th century until its being addictive was discovered. Methadone and codeine are other examples of opioids. Opioid substances are substances found in the sap of the opium poppy.

Substance addiction is considered as a behavioral health disorder due to the effects brought about by the use of the substance. It produces a great change in ones behavior that is most of the time negative. This alteration in behavior usually affects the people that surround the individual. These substances are against the law and can only be used lawfully when prescribed by specialists. One should be wary and stay away from this substances to not develop a problem.

Behavioral health disorders are hazardous to anybody especially addiction.
